Who this procedure suits

This operation addresses loose skin and a weakened muscle wall confined to the area below the navel, often left after pregnancy or weight loss, when the upper abdomen still has reasonable tone and elasticity.

A good candidate if

  • Loose lower-abdominal skin with a stable, healthy body weight
  • Lower muscle wall laxity (below the navel) without significant upper abdominal separation
  • Good skin elasticity above the umbilicus
  • No plans for future pregnancy

Not suitable if

  • Significant excess skin or laxity above the navel
  • Plans for future pregnancy
  • Active smoking without a period of cessation
  • Unstable weight or BMI outside the range considered safe for elective surgery

How the procedure is performed

Consultation

Dr Cardinali examines your abdominal skin, muscle tone and scar history, discusses your goals, and confirms whether a mini or full tummy tuck is more appropriate.

Preparation

Blood tests and, if indicated, a medical clearance are arranged. You will be advised on stopping smoking, adjusting certain medications, and fasting before surgery.

Surgery

Through a shorter, low incision above the pubic area, excess lower-abdominal skin is removed and the lower muscle wall is tightened. The navel is usually left in its original position.

Follow-up

You are reviewed within the first week for a wound check, then at intervals over the following months to monitor healing and settling of the scar.

Recovery — what actually happens

Day 1-3Rest with the abdomen slightly flexed. Mild swelling, bruising and discomfort are expected; a compression garment is worn.
Week 1Gentle walking encouraged. Wound review and dressing change. Avoid bending or lifting.
Week 2-4Gradual return to daily activities and light work. No heavy lifting or abdominal exercise.
Month 2-3Most swelling resolved. Light exercise can usually resume with Dr Cardinali's confirmation.
Month 6-12Scar continues to fade and soften. Final shape and scar appearance become clear.

How is a mini tummy tuck different from a full tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck treats only the area below the navel through a shorter incision, leaving the belly button in place. A full tummy tuck addresses the whole abdomen, including muscle laxity above the navel.

Will it remove stretch marks?

Stretch marks located on the skin removed during surgery will go with it. Those remaining on skin that stays in place will not be removed, though their appearance may change slightly with tightening.

Can I combine this with liposuction?

Yes, liposuction of the flanks or lower abdomen is often combined with a mini tummy tuck to refine contour, depending on your anatomy and Dr Cardinali's assessment.

Will I need a drain?

This depends on the extent of surgery. Some patients go home without a drain; others have one removed within a few days.

When can I try for another pregnancy after this surgery?

It is best to complete childbearing before a tummy tuck, as pregnancy afterwards can affect the abdominal wall repair and the aesthetic result.
